Work has begun on installing new bike facilities on both Pike Street and Pine Street between Second Avenue and Eighth Avenue. Work started on Friday evening and will wrap up early Monday morning. Prep work began earlier this week which included prepping new signals and parking changes, in addition to marking the locations of new protected bike lanes and posts. This work is part of phase one of the Pike Pine Renaissance focusing on improving the pedestrian experience and connecting Pike and Pine streets to the waterfront; from Pike Place Market to Capitol Hill.
This weekend crews will grind off old pavement markings, strip lanes, and add posts. Flaggers and police will be around to help direct traffic. By late October planter boxes will be installed and serve as a lane divider between cyclists and vehicles. There won’t be any lane or pavement markings on the Westlake Park pavers in order to maintain its iconic appearance.
This isn’t the only project downtown focusing on bike lanes. Work also began this week to extend the 2nd Avenue protected bike lane from Pike Street to Blanchard Street. Once complete, the protected bike lane will run down Second from Denny Way to Yesler Street.
Work is due to wrap up by November due to weather concerns and the holiday construction moratorium.
