Seattle’s Pike Place Public Market was just named the Best Farmers Market in America!
TheDailyMeal put together a list of 101 top Farmers Markets in America and crowned Seattle’s top tourist destination a winner. Also on the list, Tacoma comes in at 10th place.
The Pike Place Public Market is open 7-days week until about 5pm, and has become the prime spot to go for locally sourced meats, seafood, produce, flowers and crafts, which averages about $10 million a year in sales.
The historic market is a top tourist attraction, which opened in 1907, and is long overdue for an update. Construction is slated to begin this Fall 2014 and is expected to wrap up by the end of 2016. The $65 million makeover renovation is centered on replacing the aging core infrastructure, focusing on electrical, mechanical and plumbing which have all reached the end if their life. The renovation includes extending thewestern side by connecting with the Seattle waterfront as well as adding15,000 square feet of retail space, 30,000 square feet of open public space including a plaza and viewing deck, room for farm or craft stalls on the new roof terrace, 40 low-income housing units for seniors and 300 covered parking spaces.
